Does composition ever feel like an elusive, old-school art term that is unapproachable and confusing?

I feel ya.

For a long time, I felt so intimidated every time I approached a blank sheet of paper with my pen because I didn't know where to start with shapes and subjects to build a composition that felt balanced.

There are times when I still feel this way, but through many years of drawing, illustrating, and printmaking, I've found some tips and tricks to approach creating compositions with confidence.

It's a process that yes, has a lot of foundational elements and "rules," but it's also a process that requires a lot of trial and error, and most importantly, your creative intuition.
